Who doesn’t want to go on a treasure hunt? However, it would seem that in movies only do they really find the treasure hidden somewhere! Even with all the technological advancements, not all the treasures have been found. Even though they did manage to find Captain William Kidd’s lost treasure, there are still loads of treasures hidden around the world. So, here we are, with a list of top 10 hidden treasures around the world.

10. Yamashita’s Treasure at Bacuit Bay

What would you do if you were a Japanese General posted in Bacuit Bay, Philippines? Of course, loot the bordering countries and gather up a fine amount of treasure to take back to Japan. That is what Tomoyuki Yamashita, allegedly, did. He looted the neighboring countries of India, Malaysia, Thailand and Burma. This was done during the 30s until WW II. Unfortunately, before he could ship it to Japan, Japan surrendered and General had to hide the treasure on the island. He did so with his crew and a total of 172 places on the island are home to the treasure which will be worth billions by now. In the 70s Rogelio Roxas found but a tiny part of the treasure which was confiscated by President Ferdinand Marcos. Roxas sued, obviously, and was given $22 billion dollars as a settlement. Keeping the case aside, as per the story, there is much more in that island than what Roxas found.

You reap what you sow is a famous saying. During the mid 1800s, four soldiers of the Peruvian army; Luke Barrett, Arthur Brown, Jack Killorain and Diego Alvarez learnt about the treasure kept by the priests Pisco Church in Peru. They gained the confidence of the priests and sailed away with 14 tons of gold and other unknown treasures. The four made a map of the area and ditched the loot. They were hoping to come back later and get the treasure. However, tragedy befell them and two of them died while two were sentenced to Jail time. Only Killorain survived this all and before his death told a gentleman, Charles Howe about this feat. Howe did find the treasure but was poorly equipped to move it and had to leave the treasure behind. Lack of money didn’t permit him to make the journey again. He told George Hamilton about it who couldn’t find the treasure because of his inability to understand the map.

Perhaps the only legendary treasure with a map that will supposedly guide you to 14 tons of gold is the Lue. There is a well known story that the tools required to break the map included; one dollar bill, a key and an understanding of Masonic symbolism. It was published by Karl Von Mueller. It is said to exist hidden in United States. One story about the treasure goes like this; the gold was brought to US by Nazis in an attempt to destroy the US economy but the plan failed and they also lost the gold since the creator of map had died and they couldn’t decipher the Lue.

Ah, finally, we are here; the city of Gold, a source of fascination for so many. There are some very interesting stories related to it. It is said that the nobles of this city ate from plates made of gold. Imagine the value if this treasure could be unearthed. Herman Cortes, in 1526, found it and later in 1544 Cristobol de Pedraza stumbled upon it. William Strong, an Archeologist, in 1933 found ‘archeological mounds’ near Rio Patuca and Rio Conquirre. The legend has found most of the fame because of these findings which validate its existence as compared to other legends of treasures. The National Science Foundation and the University of Houston have recently used advance technology to map the ancient ruins. Fingers crossed!

6. Genghis Khan Issyk-Kul’s Treasure
Lake Issyk-Kul is famous for a variety of reasons; like Templar Knights and Christians burying their treasures in the lake. Out of many legends, the most famous one is about Commander Genghis Khan who is assumed to be buried in the lake along with his treasure which he gathered by capturing most of Asia and China. The value of treasure is considered to be immense; however, the location of the tomb and treasure is unknown. It is said that all those who had any knowledge about the tomb were killed by soldiers and after the funeral these soldiers were killed too once they returned back.  There were attempts to expedite the tomb and treasure in 20’s but they stopped due to political instability. However, recently Japanese and American researches are working to find tomb and treasure both.

This one seems as if it comes right from a Hollywood movie script. Santissima Concepcion or better known as ‘El Grande’ was a ship which was a victim of hurricane in Florida. Apart from survivors, 4-190 out of the total 500 people on board, there are records that the ship carried 1,800,000 pesos worth treasure. According to the records; ‘77 chests of pearls and 49 chests of emeralds’ were on deck. Numerous attempts, failed attempts, have been made in search for this treasure. How would you feel if you were to recover the SS Islander which sank in 1901 and is assumed to have gold on board, quite happy we presume? So, imagine the shock Mars Company must have felt when they found out that, after recovering the ship in 2012, there was no gold on board. However, the company strongly believes that the gold must be lying on the sea bed for they have found gold dust and pieces of gold on the ship. The treasure is valued over $250 million. The company is planning for another expedition for obvious reasons.

The ship, Antilla, is also known as the Ghost ship by the locals. One needs to dive near the North Point of Aruba to find the wreckage. The story about this treasure tells us that Antilla was anchored at the North Shore when it was asked to surrender. The ship’s captain considered his options on shore while he left the ship’s seacock open which ended up in explosion and sinking of the ship along with the treasures on board. The Ghost ship is considered a tribute to the German soldiers of World War II.

Once again, we find ourselves at a Hollywood movie set; a cursed treasure, belonging to Apache Indian who earned it by looting a wagon train. Although the location is said to be cursed, treasure hunters have not been able to keep away from this treasure and they are trying hard to get their hands on it.

This one involves the Apache Indians again. There is a canyon, Lost Adams Diggings in western New Mexico where in early 1860s Adams and a team of miners found gold nuggets which were hidden what Adams called ‘corn –grinding basin’. Adams left the site on second night and it is rumored that the miners who stayed behind were killed by the Apache Indians. Adams was never able to find ‘his’ gold canyon again which is supposedly located along the White River and White Mountains.
